IP67 and NEMA6 ratings indicate a device’s ability to withstand harsh conditions. IP Ratings are defined by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC). In our industry, IP ratings avoid vague terms like waterproof or dust proof, giving a more exact enclosure standard. An IP67 rating means the equipment is dust-tight and can handle immersion in water up to 1 meter for 30 minutes. NEMA6 is the US equivalent of IP67. IP67 is a high effectiveness level for protecting electrical enclosures against intrusion from foreign bodies and moisture. These ratings are crucial for ensuring the safety and functionality of electrical equipment, particularly in environments that are prone to dust, water, and other potential contaminants. Water is very harmful to electronics in two key ways: electrolytes and oxidisation. Electrolytes are tiny particles which allow electrons to jump from their position in the circuit, frying components. Oxidisation occurs when the oxygen in the water steals sub-atomic molecules from metal, causing dreaded corrosion.
It’s not just the conditions outside the enclosure that are important but inside, too. Sudden drops in temperature outside can create a vacuum in the enclosure, potentially ruining delicate and expensive equipment. We need vents to dissipate excess condensation and keep contaminants out, while relieving internal pressure to protect the enclosure seals. GTT Wireless mSmart-Box® aluminium enclosures come with a Gore® vent as standard. All GTT Wireless outdoor electronics enclosures have a high-quality coating. To provide a high level of protection and security, we use SurTec650 passivation. This is a chromium-free trivalent coating, suitable for aluminium enclosures. SurTec650 provides superior protection against water immersion and dust. It is also heat-resistant up to 100°C, safeguarding your equipment from the impacts of harsh environments. This is the same coating used to protect runways onboard aircraft carriers at sea.
