IK ratings are an international numeric classification designed to indicate the degrees of protection provided by enclosures for electrical equipment against external mechanical impacts. Providing engineers or equipment designers with a means of accurately specifying the ability of an enclosure to protect its contents from external impacts.
These are defined and classified as IKXX where “XX” is a digit graded from 00 to 10. IK00 having no protection from external impacts whilst rating IK10 being the most protected, equivalent to 5kg being dropped from 400mm above the impact surface. The impact levels are measured in Joules (J) and further classified in the table below. Tests are carried out in accordance with EN62262, or the international equivalent IEC 62262.
